Bulova is an American brand: born in New York in 1875, it turned 150 in 2025 and has been part of the Citizen group since 2008. It is the most accessible brand we carry — from about €170, with the middle of the range around €370 — and the one with the best story: one of its chronographs has been on the Moon. The Lunar Pilot: the watch that went to the Moon During Apollo 15 in 1971 the crystal came off Dave Scott’s issued watch, and for the third moonwalk he wore his own Bulova chronograph instead. It is the only privately owned watch ever used on the lunar surface, and in 2015 that very piece sold at auction for over a million dollars. Buying an American brand from Europe Let us be straight, because it matters here more than for other brands: Bulova is American and easy to find in the United States. What a European authorised dealer adds is a different question — references that circulate mainly in Europe, and a shop that services what it sells. The practicalities: Shipping to the US and Canada is a flat €22.50, insured and tracked, in 3–5 business days. Prices include Italian VAT, which is removed at checkout for orders shipped outside the EU. Import duties and taxes on arrival are the buyer’s responsibility. Every watch ships with its original box, papers and two-year manufacturer warranty. 262 kHz, automatics and crystals: what to expect Two things belong together, the good and the less good. The good is the 262 kHz Precisionist: a quartz oscillating eight times faster than a standard one, with high stated accuracy and a continuously sweeping seconds hand. Alongside it, a good half of the range is automatic, often with a display caseback. The less good: the crystal is mineral across much of the range, not sapphire, and mineral scratches more easily. That is the main difference from brands costing three times as much, and we would rather write it here than let you find out later. Where a reference does use sapphire, the product page says so. Accutron and Curv: the two times Bulova really innovated In 1960 Bulova launched the Accutron, the first wristwatch in the world without a balance wheel: in its place a tuning fork vibrating at 360 Hz, humming instead of ticking, with an accuracy nothing else could match at the time. Accutron units flew on Apollo missions and sat in the instrument panel of Air Force One. Accutron is a separate brand today, but that history is why the name still carries weight. The second time is recent: the Curv uses the world’s first curved chronograph movement — not just a shaped case, which many brands do, but the movement itself, so a generous chronograph sits into the wrist rather than on top of it. Several versions are titanium. Two more worth knowing, both of which we normally hold: the Jet Star, a compact 40 mm sports piece, and the Wilton, an automatic dress watch with a display caseback. A quartz movement oscillating at 262,144 Hz, eight times a standard quartz. The result is very high stated accuracy and, more visibly, a smoothly sweeping seconds hand instead of a ticking one — the most recognisable Bulova trait. Are Bulova watches good quality? They are serious watches for the price, and the other side deserves saying too. Bulova belongs to Citizen, has real technical heritage and a good number of automatics. But the crystal is mineral on much of the range, not sapphire: that is the main difference from brands costing three times as much, and it is fair to know it beforehand.
