The chronograph is the complication enthusiasts love most: it measures
elapsed time with a hand that runs independently of the time of day, driven by two
pushers. Cicala stocks chronograph watches from the leading Swiss and Japanese makers,
automatic and quartz, all with official manufacturer warranty and serviced in our own
watchmaking workshop in Genoa, Italy.
The side pushers start, stop and reset the measurement without disturbing the current
time. What you see on the dial:
A bi-compax chronograph has two sub-dials, running seconds and
chronograph minutes; a tri-compax adds a third for the hours.
The Longines Heritage and Spirit
chronographs run L688 calibres derived from the ETA 7750, with a tachymeter scale and
COSC certification on the Spirit versions. The
Bulova Lunar Pilot reprises the
chronograph worn on the Moon in 1971 and carries the very high frequency 262 movement.
The Mido Multifort Chronograph is the
mid-range Swiss automatic benchmark, with a 44 mm case and 100 m water resistance. From
Seiko, the solar Speedtimer is the most
advanced chronograph under €500, while the Prospex brings the Japanese mechanical calibre
to the sports diver. The Junghans 1972
Competition, on a Sellita SW500, is the Bauhaus tribute to Olympic timing; the
Maurice Lacroix Pontos
Chronographe is the only one in the catalogue with a column wheel and Côtes de Genève
finishing on show.
A chronograph is a function: the ability to measure elapsed time with
dedicated pushers. A chronometer is a certificate of accuracy issued by
the Swiss COSC institute after sixteen days of testing, to a tolerance of ±4 seconds a
day. A watch can be one without being the other.
The column wheel is the mechanism that commands start, stop and reset. Against the cam
system, which is cheaper to produce, it gives a smoother feel under the finger, less
friction between the parts and a longer life. It is a reliable sign of careful
construction.
Yes — that is what they are for. The one rule: never operate the pushers
underwater, or while the watch is wet, unless they are screw-down. That is the
most common way a chronograph loses its water resistance.
Slightly. The chronograph module adds moving parts, so the usual four-to-five-year
interval matters more than on a simple three-hander, especially if you use the stopwatch
often. It is done in our own workshop.
