Wolf: Quality in Luxury Jewelry and Accessories

AAntonio Cicala February 1, 2025 4 min read

In brief. Wolf — a company founded in 1834 — does three things: watch winders (automatic watch rotors), boxes and cases for watches and jewelry, and small leather goods. Our catalog features over three hundred eighty Wolf items, from watch winders — a single unit starts at around €370 — to boxes and cases, which begin at just a few dozen euros. 🔴 A watch winder is truly useful for those who own multiple automatics or a watch with a complex calendar to keep set; for someone who owns just one and wears it every day, it simply isn't necessary.

What a watch winder is (and when you need one)

A watch winder is a device that slowly rotates an automatic watch to keep its mainspring wound. It isn't a collector's accessory: it's preventive maintenance — but only in certain situations.

You need one if:

  • you own multiple automatics and wear only one at a time: the others, left still, wind down and must be reset every time you pick them up;
  • you own a watch with an annual or perpetual calendar, or with moon phases: resetting it is a lengthy process you'd rather not repeat;
  • you keep your watch in a safe: inside a winder, it's also sheltered from dust and humidity.

You don't need one if you own a single watch and wear it every day: your wrist does the winding, and modern movements with 72 hours of power reserve comfortably cover the weekend.

The question everyone asks: "Does it wear out the watch?"

A quality winder, set correctly, causes no more wear than your wrist does: automatic movements are designed to turn all day long, and the barrel's slipping clutch prevents overwinding. What actually causes harm is the opposite: a watch left still for months, with lubricants thickening and congealing.

🔴 The two things to get right are: setting a realistic number of turns per day (see below) and choosing a winder that is quiet and well-built, because inexpensive models vibrate — and the truly poor ones can magnetize the watch.

How to choose: the three numbers that matter

  1. TPD — turns per day. Most movements are happy between 650 and 900 turns per day. An adjustable winder covers everything; a fixed-setting unit should be verified against your specific movement.
  2. Direction of rotation. Some movements wind in one direction only, others in both. A winder with a bidirectional program (clockwise, counterclockwise, alternating) works with everything.
  3. Rest cycles. A good winder doesn't spin continuously: it alternates rotation cycles and rest periods, which is how a wrist actually moves throughout the day.

Then there are the practical considerations: capacity (one, two, four slots or more), power source — AC or battery — batteries are convenient in a safe where there's no outlet — and the cushion, which must hold the watch securely without straining the bracelet.

What you'll find in our catalog

  • Single watch winders — our most requested range, from around €370: for example the single winders with cover, available in multiple colors, or the Wolf Cub series.
  • Double and multi-watch winders, up to large collector's units.
  • Watch boxes — from two-slot cases to full collector's display cabinets.
  • Jewelry cases, jewelry organizers, and travel cases.
  • Small leather goods and accessories.

Everything is available on the watch winders page and the watch accessories page; the complete brand selection is here.

Boxes and cases: the part that's often overlooked

A watch that isn't being worn should be kept dry, away from light, and still. A lined box protects it from dust, knocks, and direct light — which can damage light-colored dials and aged lume — and keeps pieces separated, because two watches knocking together will scratch each other.

The same applies to jewelry: separate compartments matter, because hard gemstones scratch gold, and silver tarnishes faster when exposed to humid air. A few more care tips can be found on the page about how to care for your watches.

Frequently asked questions

Does a watch winder damage the watch?
No, provided it's a quality unit set to the correct number of turns: an automatic movement is built to run. Leaving it idle for months with thickening lubricants causes far more harm.
How many turns per day should I set?
Between 650 and 900 TPD works well for most movements. If your watch's manual specifies a value, follow that.
Do I need one if I only own one watch?
Usually not: if you wear it every day, it winds itself. A winder becomes useful when you own multiple automatics, or a watch with a complicated calendar that's tedious to reset.
AC power or battery?
AC for everyday use; battery if the winder will live in a safe or in a cabinet without a nearby outlet.
Can a watch winder magnetize the watch?
A poorly made model can, if the motor isn't shielded. This is one of the reasons it pays to stay with reputable brands.
