Gold chain jewelry: the precious fabric you wear on your skin

The gold chain — necklaces and bracelets built by interlocking or linking metal rings — is one of the oldest and most sophisticated forms of jewelry. It is not just any accessory: it is an object that combines refined artisan technique, visual beauty, and a unique tactile sensation. A guide to the different types.

The most common chain styles

Venetian chain (box chain) — square rings joined together to form a chain with a characteristic square cross-section. Rigid, brilliant, iconic. It feels solid to the touch — it is the chain that rings when it falls on a table.

Forzatina chain — the classic Italian chain, with oval rings twisted in an alternating pattern. Extremely flexible, it moves like liquid on the neck or wrist. The most popular chain in Italy for women's necklaces.

Rolo chain — uniform circular rings connected perpendicularly. Simple, sturdy, visually clean. Widely used for pendant necklaces because the pendant can slide freely along the links.

Groumette chain (curb chain) — flat, twisted rings that fit perfectly into one another. Flat, brilliant, with a large surface that reflects light beautifully. A classic in men's jewelry.

Snake chain — very small rings forming an almost continuous surface, like the skin of a snake. Extremely supple, smooth to the touch, with a very feminine and contemporary aesthetic.

Figaro chain — an alternating pattern of rings of different sizes, typically three small links followed by one larger one. Highly recognizable, traditionally masculine.

Weight and thickness

A quality gold chain has a perceptible weight — gold is a dense metal. Chains that are too light are often hollow on the inside (known as "tubular" chains) — they last less and break more easily. For everyday wear, a solid chain of good thickness is the right investment.
