Men’s Rings: A Guide to Style and Meanings

AAntonio Cicala April 10, 2026 9 min read

In brief. The most sought-after men's rings fall into just a few families: the wedding band, the chevalier worn on the pinky, the smooth or worked band, the symbol ring (anchor, compass rose, lighthouse), the dark-stone ring — usually black onyx — and the ring with a personalized engraving or cameo. Materials: burnished 925 silver and 18k gold. There is only one style rule: two or three rings in total, with consistent metals.

A man wearing rings beyond a wedding band is nothing new historically: it has been done for millennia, with the signet ring, the military ring, the ring of belonging. What has changed in recent years is the naturalness with which it happens. Those who come in asking for a men's ring almost never ask for "a piece of jewelry": they ask for an object that makes sense on them, something they can wear every day and that looks like no one else's.

This guide grew out of a list we published in 2020 on the most requested styles of the year, which has since proved more enduring than the trend that inspired it: those same ten ring types are still the ten that men try on at the counter. Here we reorganize them by category, with materials, craftsmanship details, and the right way to wear them.

The Wedding Band: The First Men's Ring

It remains the most widespread men's ring, and for many it is the only one. In Italy, tradition places it on the left ring finger; in much of Northern Europe, on the right. Its presence or absence is a code everyone reads without needing an explanation. From a construction standpoint, it is also the ring worn the longest and most continuously, so shank thickness, height, and finish truly matter: a profile that is too high will spin on the finger; one that is too thin will wear out sooner.

Many men choose a wide, high-polish wedding band, but the more interesting territory lies elsewhere: the worked band. A white gold band with screw-head engravings running all the way around, for example, was born as a men's everyday ring and is often chosen as a wedding band precisely for the simplicity of its design. In the same form, the screw heads can be replaced with small brilliant-cut diamonds, and the inside always remains free for an engraving: names, a date, a prayer.

The Chevalier: The Signet Ring

It is the second most popular men's ring, and the one most steeped in history: born as an aristocratic ring for stamping sealing wax. Today it is a piece of identity. It is almost always worn on the pinky, right or left, and the flat table on top can hold a coat of arms, a monogram, or a personal symbol.

For a man who has never worn jewelry, a slim silver chevalier on the pinky is the most natural entry point: it is barely noticeable, yet it changes the entire tone of a hand. The elegant variation of the chevalier is the ring with a rectangular satin-finish plate, designed to sit beneath a shirt cuff without clashing — here too, the top surface can be engraved with an initial or a coat of arms.

Symbol Rings: Anchor, Compass Rose, Lighthouse

This is the category that dominates all others in Liguria, and not by chance. The anchor ring has been the most searched style for years: in its most recognized version, it is made in hypoallergenic 925 silver, with a large anchor on the upper face and a sailing ship on the shank, and it owes much of its character to the burnishing, which darkens the recessed areas and brings the relief to the fore.

The compass rose is the second most popular nautical motif. It has existed for decades in its classic all-silver form; the version that relaunched the style — unveiled at the Vicenza Jewelry Fair — sets the rose against a polished black onyx background, and the contrast between the white metal and the dark stone is what makes it recognizable from across the room.

Then there is the lighthouse ring, or lantern ring: it is one of our own creations, born for Genova as a replica of the Lanterna, and has since become a men's ring we ship worldwide. It is made in a personalized version featuring the city's coat of arms and the word GENOVA on the shank, or with a fully polished shank for those who want only the tower. We have documented its evolution, in silver and gold, on the page dedicated to the new rings of Genova.

Stone Rings: Onyx and Others

Dark or boldly characterized stones work exceptionally well in men's jewelry: black onyx, black agate, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and in yellow gold, even ruby. The style that has won over the most men is a fully burnished 925 silver ring centered on a faceted onyx cut in a shield shape: the faceting gives it a luminosity that a flat stone lacks, and the shield shape removes any resemblance to a women's ring.

Two things to know before choosing a black stone for an everyday ring:

  • Onyx and agate have good hardness, but polished edges will lose their luster with impact: a setting that protects the edge is preferable;
  • Turquoise and lapis lazuli are softer and more porous, sensitive to perfumes, lotions, and detergents: clean only with a dry cloth.

Engravings, Initials, and Cameos

The share of custom-commissioned men's rings has grown more than any other category, and the reason is simple: an engraved ring is the only one you will never risk seeing on someone else's finger. The ring with an engraved initial is a classic that has come back into circulation over the past few years; one of the most successful versions places the initial at the center and, in the frame around it, the birth date and zodiac sign of the wearer. It is made to order, entirely by hand, in ten to fifteen days.

The next level is the cameo. The reference style is a round ring in burnished silver centered on a natural shell hand-engraved to order: because it is custom-engraved, it can carry any figure, logo, letter, seal, or coat of arms. The piece that best represents this craft is the Saint George and the Dragon, born from our own idea and engraved by the masters at Cameo Italiano; that ring was created to raise funds for the Associazione Gaslini Onlus, which supports children admitted to the Ospedale Pediatrico Gaslini in Genova. If you want to understand how the process works step by step, everything is laid out in the guide to the personalized engraved ring.

Bands, Braids, and Skulls: Rings Without a Symbol

Not everyone wants a motif. For those seeking a ring that is purely about volume and material, the choice comes down to three forms. The braided ring — a slim band crafted and finished by hand by the silversmiths — is the most versatile: because the shank is open, it fits almost any finger and pairs naturally with a second ring. The smooth band, polished or satin-finished, is the opposite: a solid block that commands attention through weight, not design; you will find it in every width among the band rings. And then there is the skull, a classic that never goes away: the version that keeps working is in silver, with a fully worked surface and deep burnishing that carves out the shadows — when the modeling is detailed, it holds; when it is approximate, it shows immediately.

How Many to Wear, and How

The guidelines we give at the counter are few and can be learned in a minute:

  • Two or three rings in total, distributed between both hands, without overloading just one;
  • One ring per finger, with one exception that always works: pinky and ring finger on the same hand;
  • Consistency of metal — all silver or all gold — unless the piece is specifically designed to be two-tone;
  • If one ring has a strong motif (skull, lighthouse, anchor), the others should remain plain.

On sizing, a word of caution worth more than any style tip: a man's hand changes considerably between morning and evening, and even more so between winter and summer. A wide band ring fits tighter than a slim one at the same size, so the measurement must be taken on the actual style, not in the abstract. In the ring size guide you will find the method for getting it right from home without making a mistake.

Where to Try Them and How We Make Them

Our men's rings are split between our two stores in Genova, at Via San Vincenzo 110r in the city center and at Via Martiri della Libertà 23-25r in Pegli: both are fully stocked and equivalent, but a specific style may be found in one or the other. Before you visit, message us on WhatsApp at +39 010 698 1030 and we will tell you where to try it on.

Our workshop creates men's rings to order in 925 silver and 18k gold, performs internal and external engravings, and handles sizing enlargements and reductions. Repairs are accepted at both stores, with a receipt, and are worked on-site by us.

Frequently Asked Questions About Men's Rings

Which ring suits a man who has never worn jewelry?
A slim silver chevalier on the pinky, or a narrow smooth band. Both are discreet, require no change in personal style, and become completely unnoticeable after two days. This is exactly the type of ring many men "could never picture on themselves" — and then never take off.
Silver or gold for a men's ring?
925 silver, especially burnished, works better for worked motifs — anchors, lighthouses, skulls — because the shadows give relief to the design. Gold is chosen when the ring needs to last a lifetime and sit alongside a wedding band: bands, chevalier rings, screw-head rings.
Can a coat of arms or logo be engraved on a ring?
Yes. On a chevalier table or satin-finish plate, engraving is done by burin or machine; on natural shell, it is hand-engraved, with longer lead times. A starting image is needed, even a rough one: we refine it before beginning work.
Can the screw-head ring be used as a wedding band?
It happens often. The design is understated enough to carry that role, the inside remains available for engraving names or dates, and in the version with small diamonds in place of the screw heads, it becomes one half of a couple's matching set.
How long does a custom ring take?
For a ring with an engraved initial and surrounding frame, allow ten to fifteen days of artisan craftsmanship. For a hand-engraved cameo, timing depends on the motif. Resizing an existing ring is considerably faster.
